BACKGROUND

It was in the latter half of the year 1988, the then District Governor Rtn. Dr. Laxmikant Bhojwani requested the Rotary Club of Pune Central to explore the possibility of starting a new Rotary Club in the eastern part of the city. He appointed Rtn. PP Shri B. R. Malhotra as his Special Representative.

Rtn. Shri B. R. Malhotra surveyed the territory, met a good number of high profile persons and prepared an exhaustive list of prospective members who would be the members of the new Rotary Club. He then recommended to the District Governor that the New Rotary Club could be started somewhere near Koregaon Park. The District Governor approved this recommendation and thus the Rotary club of Pune Riverside was sponsored.

The Rotary Club of Pune Central not only sponsored this new club, but also allowed four of its senior memebrs – Rtn. Ramesh Navani, Rtn. Mukesh Malhotra, Rtn. Puneet Malhotra and Rtn. Kiran Bafna, to join this new club. The club had total 32 Charter members.

This new club had its first meeting on 15th May 1989..This was the beginning of the club. During the next five meetings, members were fed with a lot of Rotary information, values, basic concepts and the culture of Rotary.

In the meantime, the charter was received on Wednesday the 28th June 1989. It was the day to remember – the club officially became the member of Rotary International. The Charter Presentation ceremony was held on that day at Hotel Executive Ashoka. The District Governor Rtn. Dr. Laxmikant Bhojwani did the honours. Rtn. Ramesh Navani was installed as the Charter President of the Club. Rtn. Prakash Gugale was the Honorary Secretary.

The Club has its meetings on every Wednesday in the morning.  For the first ten years the meetings were held at Hotel Blue Diamond, Pune and thereafter till date at Hotel Le Meridien, Pune. The unique feature of this club is that this is the Breakfast Club and the first of its kind throughout the country.
